It was a crime for you NOT to have a forum in which to write comics. Loved the Folk review, as well. Stafford's an interesting talent who's working through his influences right now.

Great review, Ed! I reviewed this book at High-Low awhile back, and concur that the Craghead piece was truly something special. Dinski's piece was more visually appealing in its original minicomics format. I think he's a really intriguing artist....

Both of the comics reviewed in today's column have to do with animals in peril, but that's about where the similarities end. Matt Dembicki's XOC is the first issue of an ongoing series about the migration pattern of a particular shark, from righ...

Oh yeah, do a Popeye! In fact, I'd love to see a whole anthology. I've always had a soft spot for unofficial, off-model usage of beloved characters.

My pleasure. I can always use a scribbled napkin! I think you and Popeye would really be a great mix--I'd be keen to see that. --Rob

Another cool review! Wasn't even expecting it! Sent you the comics as a thanks for the first review. I'll have to send you some scribbled napkins now as thanks. You've actually sparked an idea. I might tackle a Popeye strip. (We can do that here i...

Pour is amazing. I can't stress how fresh some of these ideas are, especially in comparasion to a lot of other joke-based mini-comics stuff out there. There is a real love of the line going on and some sophisticated inking especially for the Chip ...

T.Avery's DIRTHEADS #5 was an unusual mix of styles. It's a slice-of-life character drama, but crafted as a traditional comic strip with punchlines at the end of every episode. It's drawn in a naturalistic style unusual for this sort of gag strip...

Review: Xoc by Matt Dembicki; Saving Carlos by Jarod Rosello

Both of the comics reviewed in today's column have to do with animals in peril, but that's about where the similarities end. Matt Dembicki's XOC is the first issue of an ongoing series about the migration pattern of a particular shark, from right off the Pacific coast of California to Hawaii. It reminds me a bit of Ste… Continue

Review: La Frime and Box #1

I was happy to see more comics in my mailbox from David Z Greene, given his lively line and absurd sense of humor in the Roger Langridge mold. BOX #1 is a free four-page comic that features a bout between two boxers named Selfishness and Affection. Not surprisingly, Affection went down like a sack of potatoes within 2 pages. Greene is careful not to str… Continue

Review: The Fifty Flip Experiment #11, Garden Funnies

Dan Hill's THE FIFTY FLIP EXPERIMENT notes that it takes its cues from "alternative comedy", which I take to mean elements of long-form improv and edgy subject matter. What I took away from reading this comic is that he was trying too hard to craft absurd premises and draw humor out of them. A six page story mocking the whole "sexting" scare was punishing, feeling… Continue

Review: Blue Blue Blues and Chris Ware: Paper Musician, by Ed Choy Moorman

Ed Choy Moorman, a recent grad of the Minnesota College of Art & Design (MCAD), is an interesting emerging talent. He's shown a lot of ambition in his mini DARK CLOUD COMIN' as well as a strong editorial eye with his GHOST COMICS anthology. Reviewed here today are two comics that were college assignments, both completed rather cleverly. BLUE BLUE BLUES is a 24-hour comi… Continue
