Malachi Ward's UTU is based on an extremely clever idea: what if the gods that spoke to shamen of years past were really time-travelers from the far future, trying to make the world into a better place? And what if that time-traveler was kind of a…

THE RAT NEST #1, by Pat Keck, has a gorgeously bright but visceral silk-screened cover with an intense line, with the latter look carried over inside. This is a one-man anthology that begins with a tale of a rat trying to shelter a loved one during…

Thanks, Josh & Justin! Both comics are indeed worth checking out.

Both THE MERCY KILLING and BLOOD ORANGE were written by Justin Giampaoli, and both are brief and understated comics with somewhat unexpected endings. BLOOD ORANGE, drawn by Grant Lee, is an 8-page autobiographical story from Giampaoli's childhood a…

It was a crime for you NOT to have a forum in which to write comics. Loved the Folk review, as well. Stafford's an interesting talent who's working through his influences right now.

Great review, Ed! I reviewed this book at High-Low awhile back, and concur that the Craghead piece was truly something special. Dinski's piece was more visually appealing in its original minicomics format. I think he's a really intriguing artist. I…

Both of the comics reviewed in today's column have to do with animals in peril, but that's about where the similarities end. Matt Dembicki's XOC is the first issue of an ongoing series about the migration pattern of a particular shark, from right…

Oh yeah, do a Popeye! In fact, I'd love to see a whole anthology. I've always had a soft spot for unofficial, off-model usage of beloved characters.

My pleasure. I can always use a scribbled napkin! I think you and Popeye would really be a great mix--I'd be keen to see that. --Rob

Another cool review! Wasn't even expecting it! Sent you the comics as a thanks for the first review. I'll have to send you some scribbled napkins now as thanks. You've actually sparked an idea. I might tackle a Popeye strip. (We can do that here in…

Both THE MERCY KILLING and BLOOD ORANGE were written by Justin Giampaoli, and both are brief and understated comics with somewhat unexpected endings. Review: Xoc by Matt Dembicki; Saving Carlos by Jarod Rosello

Both of the comics reviewed in today's column have to do with animals in peril, but that's about where the similarities end. Matt Dembicki's XOC is the first issue of an ongoing series about the migration pattern of a particular shark, from right off the Pacific coast of California to Hawaii. It reminds me a bit of Ste… Continue

Review: La Frime and Box #1

I was happy to see more comics in my mailbox from David Z Greene, given his lively line and absurd sense of humor in the Roger Langridge mold. BOX #1 is a free four-page comic that features a bout between two boxers named Selfishness and Affection. Not surprisingly, Affection went down like a sack of potatoes within 2 pages. Greene is careful not to str… Continue

Yeah, I used construction paper for that white on black strip. Big mistake. Thanks for the good comments. Keep in mind 'Red Star' is just a 'supplement" to WELTSCHMERZ. There are several more.I consider it a book -in-progress. ...around 160 pges now…
