It came as a sad shock to open up a recent CBG and find a notice of Jane's death last Aug. 22 of cancer.

Jane was born July 7, 1954 in Houston, Texas. She became interested in the world of bizarro comix in 1973 while attending Art Spiegelman's underground cartooning class at the San Francisco Art Academy. Her involvement with the Newave network began in 1976 when she met Clay Geerdes while studying art at Sonoma State University.

People sometimes ask me why I draw what I draw. It’s a good question although I’m not sure that I have a really good answer. Sometimes I just draw whatever happens to find its way to the blank page in front of me. There are limitations – I’m not an accomplished (trained) artist so I draw what I can draw and that’s what ends up on the page. Other times, I give myself drawing “assignments” – for example, I’ll go get breakfast at The Dome (spinach pie with a fried egg on top)...

Steve Willis has been self-publishing obscuro comix since 1973. In late 1981 he connected with Clay Geerdes' Newave network and was most prolific 1982-1986. He is mostly known for being the creator of Morty the Dog. He also founded the Outside In series, edited City Limits Gazette 1991-1993, and established the Washington State University collection of underground, Newave, and self-published comix in his real-life job as a librarian.
