POWER OUT by Nathan Schreiber

E-mail Print PDF
This 2009 Xeric Grant winner clocks in at 84 pages for $9.95 and more information can be found at www.nathanschreiber.com or www.poweroutcomic.com. This is a really nice looking product, with visuals that feel like Nate Powell (Tiny Giants, Swallow Me Whole) and his sketchy style, blended with the refined characteristics and soft-edged figure work of someone like Adrian Tomine. The blue tones running throughout the book provide a suitably somber mood for this coming-of-age story. We find our...

Review: Eschew #2

E-mail Print PDF
Robert Sergel's work feels like a cross between the finely-rendered naturalism and quotidian observations of Jonathan Bennett and the stark, bold style and deadpan storytelling of John Hankiewicz. Like Hankiewicz, Sergel's comics are all about panel-to-panel rhythm and the use of still, static imagery to create an emotional charge. Take "Flying Squirrel", for example. The first page of the strip introduces to a long-shot view of a dead squirrel on the highway, then an image of a bird of...

9-11 #2 by Colin Upton

E-mail Print PDF
www.colinupton.com
Colin Upton offers up the next installment of his 9-11 series for just 75 cents and the strengths and weaknesses remain very consistent. There are still dozens of examples of apostrophe, comma, spelling, and grammar problems (I know, I know…) distracting me from the work. I’m trying to minimize my focus on this, but it’s hard when panels begin with lines like “enviroment poisened…,” the defunct double tap effectively pushing me right out. I try hard to overlook...

9-11 #1 by Colin Upton

75 cents seems to be Colin Upton’s price point of choice for his 16-pagers, and it’s a real bargain for what you get in return. His ongoing series of 9-11 books are done on the one, two, three, etc. year anniversaries of the terrorist attacks against the United States and document his general reactions and observations. Upton’s minis are still unfortunately plagued by inconsistencies with apostrophe usage, with at least 11 mistakes found in this 16-page comic. His...

PTERODACTYL HUNTERS by Brendan Leach

E-mail Print PDF
If you can imagine a mainstreamy blend of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen coupled with DC Comics’ recent Wednesday Comics project helmed by Editor Mark Chiarello, you’d be getting close to the visual production wonder of Pterodactyl Hunters. It’s a 36 page comic on newsprint that’s made to look like a faux newspaper edition of The Sun from an alternate reality New York, circa 1904. The “front page” is brilliant; it combines the perfect...
